Abstract

Objective: To explore the privatisation of ports. This article makes the general case in favour of privatisation, vis-à-vis government ownership is a strong one: efficiency, lower costs, greater flexibility. We apply it to the special case of ocean ports to the same end. If we want more effective harbours, we should move in the direction of privatisation.

Research Design & Methods: We make the case for this public policy based on logic and empirical evidence.

Findings: The case for the privatisation of ports is very strong.

Implications / Recommendations: If our recommendations are followed, the implication is an increase in economic welfare.

Contribution: There are no other studies of this initiative; thus, our contribution is, hopefully, to begin exploration of this initiative.
