Abstract

Objective: The article focuses on the presentation and comparison of two Chinese crafts – shoemaking and tailoring from the point of view of the service sector market.

Research Design & Methods: The paper presents an analysis of documents indexed in the Web of Science and Scopus databases and not indexed – published on the Internet in Chinese, including materials based on interviews with Chinese craftsmen and industry reports.

Findings: The development trajectory of shoemaker services remains uncertain, but their evolution is closely tied to stages in the footwear industry. Chinese tailoring has grown by targeting international markets, leveraging e-commerce, emphasising cultural heritage, and focusing on prestigious clientele, thereby fostering the creation of Chinese brands. Sustainable practices in the craft emphasise environmental responsibility and preserving cultural heritage to ensure its promotion and continuation.

Implications / Recommendations: The shift toward service-oriented, quality- and brand-focused activities implies that stakeholders should support skill development, digitalisation, and branding while balancing commercialisation with the preservation of cultural heritage and environmental responsibility.

Contribution: Due to the inconsiderable representation of the chosen topic in scientific databases, the article aims to fill the research gap and contribute to the promotion and sustainability of craftsmanship.
